Tier rates were not implemented to punish you. For over 20 years Californians have known that we need to conserve water. We were asked to conserve 20% and it just hasn’t happened. So, the Tier rate structure was introduced by a few agencies to help get the ball rolling. Depending upon who you talk to it has been a great success with dropping water usage by nearly 30% in some areas. Many of us are not big water wasters so the Tier rates are not there to punish us. The choice is simple, if you want to waster water, go ahead and pay for it. Irvine Ranch Water District set the standard to the Tier rates used throughout California. Most water agencies are using some modified version of their format.
With the continuing water shortages that don’t appear to be going away, we will all have to learn to live on less water. So conserve and “Stop the Water Waste.”
